The "Commemorative Ceremony for Mehmet Akif Ersoy in regard to the Acceptance of the Turkish National Anthem" organized by the Nişantaşı University Sociology Club was held online on the Zoom platform on March 12th. Researcher and writer Tahsin Yıldırım from Mehmet Akif Ersoy Intellectual and Art Foundation attended the event as the speaker.

At the event which was held with the intense interest of academicians and students, the importance of Mehmet Akif Ersoy in the national struggle and the story of the Turkish National Anthem were told.

Emphasizing the anniversary of the acceptance of the National Anthem, Yıldırım stated that the 100th year is very important in terms of symbolizing nationalism with a numerical expression.

Tahsin Yıldırım ended his speech by saying “In the national struggle, the Ottoman Empire did not have an anthem and it should have been one that is connecting the state and the nation. At that time, the idea of preparing a national anthem that would excite the soldiers in the front, make them feel good and strengthen their spiritual feelings came to the fore. At this point, the lines of the Turkish National Anthem were written by Mehmet Akif. Mehmet Akif gave us the good news of victory with the lines he wrote. While he started his lines by saying “do not be afraid”, we see him finishing his words by stating that his every effort is worth this struggle. He set out by sacrificing his family and himself to protect this heavenly homeland. He left the Turkish National Anthem to our youth, which symbolizes our independence.”
