The Refreshment University

The Refreshment University, which started last year, provides a second spring to students over the age of 60. The main aim of the university is to maintain the social life of people after retirement, 35 people in the university completed their first years and received their certificates and 40 new students started their classes.

With having the central campus in Mediterranean University, and all the activities in Istanbul conducted by Nişantaşı University, Refreshment University has started the new academic year. In addition to the academic beginning, 35 students who completed their first year were given certificates and 40 new students started their classes with the new semester.


Rector of Nişantaşı University Dr Esra Hatipoğlu spoke at the ceremony. "I am proud to be the rector of the Refreshment University. It is a huge gain for me. Last year I was very busy, and I couldn’t show enough attention to you. But this year I will be interested in a lot more. I think I will learn a lot from you, and I will do my best to keep our information sharing steady, and you are very valuable to us and to our students at the university. We are always ready to listen to your issues about the students and the university due to our faith in your experiences and different perspective. Please share everything you think will help. Because we really want to draw inspiration from your experiences. This year we now have 2 classes. We want to have more complex lessons by changing the format a little and by bringing popular names to our school week after week.”


"We are bringing different generations together"

Vice Rector of Nişantaşı University. Dr Melis Oktuğ Zengin, explains the purpose of Refreshment University as “people to not break away from social life after retirement and continue their cognitive activities ". "To continue learning and to stay in life, to develop new relationships, and to be productive is very important. Refreshment University is in parallel with Nişantaşı University's educational approach. We are an entrepreneurial university. This year we will give our students at Refreshment University entrepreneurship course. They will make entrepreneurship and social entrepreneurship projects with our other students in our Nish Nova Incubation Center. It is also very good to bring students of different generations together in lessons, events and projects.


59-year-old Neslihan Direkçi who began her classes this year said, "I learned this training from a friend, and I have been very insistent to come here. I came here with my 7 high school friends. I’m very happy and excited. We are awestruck of Refreshment”.


77-year-old Ayten Yavaşça retired from the State Conservatory of Turkish Music, "I must still have some desire to study that after so many years I enthusiastically signed up here. I chose to be in an environment open to new ideas instead of just sitting at home. I believe that my horizon will widen even more here. We will get young here, we will be renewed. I think our young friends here will benefit from our experience. Because I have so many projects on my mind and I would love to share them with my friends.”


Vedat Ulcar 64-year-old students who finished his first year in the university and got certificated, said "Our first year was very beautiful. First of all, you socialize. To me, for a retired person to sit at home or stroll in shopping malls is wrong. Here we are living our second spring and gain new information. People always lean to learn something. We are making new friends here. We refresh our information".


Named as “Third Age University” widely applied in Europe and especially in Australia, the University of Refreshment is designed for individuals aged 60 and above. Its purpose is to prepare freshening generations for lifelong learning philosophy.

With having the central campus in Mediterranean University, and all the activities in Istanbul conducted by Nişantaşı University. The Refreshment University continues its studies in the Maslak 1453 NeoTech Campus. Refreshing University, where participants are taught in areas such as health, sports, arts, economics and communication, and workshops are held for them to demonstrate their skills. While all the educators who teach in the university take part in the project as a volunteer, the students of the Refreshment University also participate in activities with their undergraduate and associate students.

The project is based on a real university system and the students receive 4 years of education. In the courses that last between 11:00 and 15:00 and three times a week, students take part in projects such as Computer Literacy and Data Security, Financial Literacy, Art History, Philosophy, Healthy Life, First Aid as well as art workshops. At the end of 4 years, students receive a certificate of participation.
