A Joint Research Ecosystem for Students Established by Istanbul Nişantaşı University and Harvard

Istanbul Nişantaşı University is building a new academic ecosystem in collaboration with scientists working at Harvard Medical School and Mass General Brigham, enabling students to become involved in real research processes while still at university. Research initiated on campus will evolve into a sustainable model supported by scientific mentorship, international research experience, publications, conferences, and new projects.

Istanbul Nişantaşı University is implementing a new research and academic development model designed to introduce students to scientific research at an early stage of their university education.

Developed under the scientific mentorship of Dr. Mehmet Furkan Burak, who works at Harvard Medical School and Mass General Brigham, the model brings together student research teams established at Istanbul Nişantaşı University and the current research environment at Harvard within the same academic cycle.

The program aims to support young people with strong research potential, particularly students from the Faculties of Medicine and Dentistry and the health sciences, in participating in scientific research at an early stage, becoming familiar with international research culture, and beginning to shape their academic paths while still students.

Students Will Be Directly Involved in Research

The model begins on the Istanbul Nişantaşı University campus.

Research projects developed by faculty members will be made available to students, with research teams of 5–7 students formed for each project. Over a period of 12–24 months, students will work alongside faculty members and take responsibility for every stage of the research process, from developing research questions, reviewing the literature, and formulating hypotheses to collecting and analyzing data, scientific writing, and conference presentations.

This approach will transform students from readers of research findings into active participants in the process of generating knowledge.

This is the central principle of the program: scientific research will not be viewed as a career path that begins after graduation, but as a culture of critical thinking and knowledge production developed throughout university education.

Research in Istanbul Will Connect with Harvard's Scientific Environment

The international dimension of the program will be established through the research program conducted by Dr. Mehmet Furkan Burak at Harvard Medical School and Mass General Brigham.

For students and early-career researchers at Istanbul Nişantaşı University, this environment will serve as a “live research laboratory,” offering opportunities to observe how ongoing scientific studies are conducted and, whr appropriate, become involved in research activities.

Students will have the opportunity to gain first-hand experience of how stages such as research planning, ethics procedures, data analysis, scientific discussion, and publication preparation are carried out within an international research grp.

Developing their own research projects and defending their work in English before an academic panel will also be important components of the model.

Student project leaders and early-career researchers who stand out during the evaluation process are expected to spend 1–2 weeks in the research environment at Harvard Medical School, whr they will present their work, attend scientific meetings, and closely observe the activities of research teams.

The central idea goes far beyond a university visit: it is about nurturing students who can bring research conducted in Istanbul into the international scientific community.

Scientists from Harvard Will Meet with Students in Istanbul

Academic engagement will be a two-way process.

Dr. Mehmet Furkan Burak is expected to meet regularly with students and academics at Istanbul Nişantaşı University throughout the year, conducting seminars and mentoring sessions on research and academic careers.

One of the program's annual highlights will be Harvard Science Day.

Planned to take place every May at Istanbul Nişantaşı University, Harvard Science Day will provide students with an opportunity to present the research projects they have developed throughout the year. Scientists participating from Harvard will also share their research and engage with students and faculty members.

In this way, the Istanbul Nişantaşı University campus will become an academic meeting place whr student research is discussed with international researchers and new research ideas emerge.

From Research to Academic Leadership

The program's objectives extend beyond scientific methodology skills.

Its academic leadership component will help students explore different development pathways, including research, clinical studies, innovation, technology, and academic careers; learn how to access international research and internship programs; and gain experience in scientific communication, academic CV preparation, and international career planning.

This approach will enable students pursuing medicine and health sciences to become familiar with the world of research while still studying and explore potential future pathways as researchers, clinician-scientists, or academics.

Faculty Members Will Also Be Part of the Ecosystem

The new model will create new research opportunities for Istanbul Nişantaşı University academics as well as students.

In addition to leading student research teams, faculty members are expected to participate in mentoring processes related to international project development, scientific collaborations, research funding, and grant applications.

Where common research interests emerge, the model also aims to enable data obtained through research programs at Harvard to be jointly evaluated with Istanbul Nişantaşı University academics, new research questions to be developed, and studies to result in co-authored scientific publications.

As a result, student projects, faculty research, and international scientific collaborations will no longer operate as separate activities but will develop together within a shared research ecosystem.

Bringing the Harvard Research Experience Back to Campus

One of the model's most important features is its emphasis on multiplying the academic experience gained through participation.

After returning to Istanbul, students who have participated in the research program at Harvard will mentor new student research teams, share their experiences, and contribute to the development of the next generation of researchers.

In this way, each new grp of students joining the program every year will benefit from the knowledge and experience of those who have completed the same research process before them.

The resulting structure will create a continuous cycle of scientific development:

By bringing together the research environments of Istanbul Nişantaşı University and Harvard, this ecosystem aims to establish a lasting academic culture in which students engage in scientific research at an early stage, faculty members develop international research networks, and the experience gained is passed on to future generations of researchers.
