A New Model at Istanbul Nişantaşı University Inspired by Harvard’s Research Culture: The Student Research Ecosystem

A New Model at Istanbul Nişantaşı University Inspired by Harvard’s Research Culture: The Student Research Ecosystem

Istanbul Nişantaşı University is launching a comprehensive Student Research Ecosystem inspired by Harvard's strong research culture and international scientific experience. The model aims to enable students to become active participants in scientific research from the early stages of their university education, take responsibility for real research projects, and engage with the international scientific community.

The project is driven by a fundamental need that is important for the future of higher education in Türkiye: introducing students to scientific research culture as early as possible.

Türkiye has a strong academic and professional talent pool, particularly in medicine and health sciences. To further develop this capacity, research culture must not be viewed as a process that begins only during postgraduate education or later stages of an academic career. It is essential to enable students to participate in scientific production from their undergraduate years onward.

Building on this approach, Istanbul Nişantaşı University aims to transform the university experience into a holistic development process in which education and research reinforce one another. In addition to learning existing knowledge, students will be encouraged to experience how that knowledge is generated and actively participate in defining scientific problems, evaluating the literature, developing hypotheses, designing research, generating and analyzing data, interpreting results, and producing scientific outputs.

A Model Inspired by Harvard's Research Culture

The international dimension of the project draws on Harvard's research culture and experience, representing one of the world's leading academic research ecosystems. The Harvard component of the project will be led by Associate Professor Mehmet Furkan Burak, a Turkish scientist working at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women's Hospital | Mass General Brigham.

Harvard's role in the model will extend beyond international academic collaboration or student mobility. The primary objective is to draw on a strong research culture in which research is an integral part of university education, students can engage with scientists and research grps at an early stage, and they can experience every stage of the research process, from formulating a scientific question to publishing the findings.

Rather than remaining an individual opportunity available to a limited number of students studying abroad, this experience is intended to develop into a permanent academic structure at Istanbul Nişantaşı University.

Students Will Join Real Research Teams

As part of the program, students will join research teams of 5–7 members led by faculty members. Instead of short-term sample studies, these teams will work on real research projects lasting approximately 12–24 months.

Students will gain direct experience in scientific research methodology, literature reviews, formulating research questions, developing hypotheses, study design, research ethics, data collection and analysis, interpretation of results, scientific writing, project development, and funding applications.

Depending on the nature of the research, ethics committee and Institutional Review Board (IRB) procedures, scientific data reliability, reproducibility, collaborative research practices, and academic publishing principles will also form part of the program.

The objective is not merely to assign students limited tasks within an already prepared study, but to enable them to learn through experience by participating in the entire research cycle, from the emergence of a scientific question to the production of an international research output.

From Research to Scientific Publications and the International Community

A key objective of the system is to ensure that student research goes beyond project reports and that high-quality studies lead to meaningful scientific outputs.

Successful studies will be encouraged to be presented at national and international conferences, developed into scientific articles, and recognized for students' contributions throughout the academic publishing process.

In this way, students will experience the entire process—from research questions to data, from data to scientific publications, and from publications to international scientific communication—during their university years. The program will also help students become familiar at an early stage with national and international research funding opportunities, project development mechanisms, and scientific collaboration networks.

An Interdisciplinary Research Culture

The Student Research Ecosystem will not be limited to a single discipline. It will establish an interdisciplinary research environment in which medicine and health sciences intersect with fundamental sciences, engineering, artificial intelligence, data science, and methods from other fields.

Areas such as health, disease mechanisms, aging, metabolism, biotechnology, personalized medicine, and emerging healthcare technologies require collaboration across different disciplines.

Accordingly, the program will encourage medical and health sciences students to engage with data science, engineering students to explore biological and clinical problems, and students in fundamental sciences to work with artificial intelligence and emerging technologies.

The aim is to equip students with interdisciplinary thinking skills, enabling them to integrate the knowledge and methods of different fields around a shared research question.

Scientific Mentorship Extending from Harvard to Istanbul

A key component of the model will be continuous and structured international scientific mentorship. In addition to the scientific mentorship of Associate Professor Mehmet Furkan Burak, seminars, workshops, and academic meetings will be organized to bring scientists from the Harvard research ecosystem together with students and academics at Istanbul Nişantaşı University.

The program is not designed solely as a remote mentoring system. Associate Professor Burak is expected to visit Istanbul Nişantaşı University at slcted intervals to work with student research teams, evaluate project progress, and hold scientific meetings with faculty members.

In this way, internationalization will evolve beyond a mobility model in which students simply travel to another country. Instead, it will become an ongoing academic relationship based on the mutual exchange of knowledge, research culture, scientific mentorship, and researchers.

Science Day and the Language of International Science

One of the most visible components of the Student Research Ecosystem will be Science Day, which is planned to take place annualy. Student research teams will present the studies they have developed throughout the year in English before a scientific jury.

Projects will be evaluated according to criteria such as scientific methodology, the quality of the research question, innovation, research quality, data use, interpretation of findings, presentation skills, teamwork, and academic leadership.

Through Science Day, students will be encouraged not only to conduct research but also to communicate their research questions, methods, findings, and scientific contributions in accordance with the language and standards of the international scientific community.

Experiencing Harvard's Research Environment Firsthand

Students slcted based on their research performance and Science Day evaluations are expected to participate in an intensive research experience lasting approximately 1–2 weeks in Boston, within Harvard Medical School and its affiliated research environments.

During this experience, students will visit research facilities and laboratories, observe how research grps operate, meet scientists, and gain firsthand insight into the everyday practice of scientific research.

The Harvard experience will extend beyond individual student achievement. Upon returning to Istanbul, participating students will support new research teams as peer mentors. In this way, international research experience will be passed on to new student cohorts, gradualy creating a self-sustaining research community.

Students Will Discover Their Scientific Interests Early

Working in real research teams, exploring different scientific questions, and engaging with international scientists will help students discover their interests and strengths at an earlier stage.

This experience will enable them to make more informed decisions about career options ranging from postgraduate education and academic careers to clinical research, biotechnology, entrepreneurship, and the healthcare and technology sectors.

Beyond producing research projects, the system will therefore function as a structure that identifies and develops future scientists and academic leaders at an early stage.

Research Education Will Enrich Education Through Research

One of the model's long-term objectives is to establish a continuous, two-way relationship between research and education. Scientific questions, new methods, technologies, and interdisciplinary experiences emerging from student research teams are expected to be incorporated into educational programs over time.

As students learn existing knowledge, they will also experience how that knowledge is generated, under what conditions it can be questioned, how it can change in light of new evidence, and how it can lead to new scientific questions.

This approach will form one of the core components of Istanbul Nişantaşı University's vision for research-based education.

From a Student Research Ecosystem to an International Research Center

The Student Research Ecosystem is regarded as one of the starting points of the university's long-term research vision. Over time, the goal is to establish a permanent knowledge-production center that brings together basic, translational, and clinical research with artificial intelligence, data science, engineering, and other disciplines, while maintaining active connections with international research networks.

Under this approach, research will not end with a scientific publication. Instead, an ecosystem will be developed in which generated knowledge can lead to new research questions, international projects, technology, innovation, and, whr appropriate, entrepreneurial ventures.

This will create a value chain connecting research initiated during university years with knowledge production, scientific outputs, innovation, and societal value.

Through this model, inspired by Harvard's research culture, Istanbul Nişantaşı University aims to transform students from passive recipients of knowledge into active participants in scientific inquiry, research, and knowledge production.

The ultimate goal is to establish a lasting academic ecosystem that integrates education and research, connects students with the international scientific community at an early stage, and nurtures its own future generations of researchers.
