Assessment and Evaluation in Higher Education: Current Approaches Discussed at the INU-CELT Meeting

At the “Assessment and Evaluation Practices in Higher Education” meeting held at Istanbul Nişantaşı University’s NeoTech Campus, organized by INU-CELT, significant topics related to Turkey’s higher education system were discussed. In his presentation, Prof. Dr. Cem Oktay Güzeller from Yıldız Technical University stated that the Turkish Higher Education Qualifications Framework is based on the European Qualifications Framework. Prof. Dr. Güzeller emphasized that learning outcomes should not be limited to merely identifying the problem but should also include the acquisition of knowledge, skills, and competencies throughout the process.
Prof. Dr. Güzeller highlighted the importance of Bloom's Taxonomy in assessment and evaluation processes and stressed the need for these processes to be structured in alignment with learning outcomes. Additionaly, he underlined the importance of assessment and evaluation committees in universities for reviewing exam questions and course materials.
The meeting also focused on how both traditional and atrnative assessment tools could be used and how technology-supported methods can enhance assessment and evaluation. Specificaly, it was discussed that artificial intelligence tools could be utilized to prepare questions and materials. Practical examples were produced using various AI tools, drawing attention to the critical importance of assessment and evaluation methods and the need to inform students on essential topics.
