The Economic and Financial Markets Outlook and Expectations panel, organized by the Economics Club, began under the moderation of Prof. Dr. Zeynep Ökten, a faculty member at the Faculty of Economics, Administrative and Social Sciences. Prof. Dr. Ökten introduced the panel speakers, emphasizing that the event would be productive and highlighting issues such as income inequality, inflation, and the effects of fiscal policies on the economic system.
The first speaker, Prof. Dr. Hakkı Öztürk from Bahçeşehir University, discussed the transformation of financial markets. He noted that flexible monetary policies implemented between 2021 and 2023 contributed to inflation and currency depreciation, while the current account deficit decreased due to a decline in gold imports. Prof. Öztürk emphasized the negative impact of high interest rates on the industrial sector, predicted the Turkish Lira would continue appreciating over the next six months, and forecasted an economic recovery in 2025 supported by central bank policies.
Mine Uzun, Corporate Communications Director at İnfo Investment, spoke about the future of the stock market and investment strategies. She highlighted the positive effects of Turkey’s removal from the gray list and credit rating upgrades on the stock market. Uzun recommended a balanced portfolio consisting of stocks, TL bonds, and safe-haven assets. She also pointed out that developments in earthquakes and foreign policy could positively influence the iron-steel, telecommunications, and banking sectors.
Mert Yılmaz, Deputy General Manager and Economist at İnfo Investment, provided insights into global and Turkish economies. He discussed the effects of changes in the Federal Reserve’s interest rate policies on the global economy and emphasized the societal impacts of income inequality and inflation in Turkey. Yılmaz suggested that social policies could enhance welfare by increasing purchasing power and encouraged young people to develop their skills to secure a place in the system.
Lastly, Dr. Fatih Anıl, a faculty member at the Faculty of Economics, Administrative and Social Sciences, shared his views on economic policies and future projections. Dr. Anıl highlighted the return to rational policies in 2023, noting that the current path was promising. However, he stressed that central bank policies alone would not suffice to reduce inflation, caling for significant savings measures at both the public and individual levels. He also pointed to the construction sector as a key investment area for post-war reconstruction and noted that food inflation had reached a psychological stage, creating additional pressure on producers.
The panel concluded with a Q&A session and the presentation of certificates of appreciation to the speakers. The event provided students with valuable insights into the economy and financial markets, helping them develop strategies for the future and gain sectoral awareness. We extend our gratitude to al speakers for their valuable contributions.
