İstanbul Nişantaşı University Faculty of Medicine continues to pursue innovative approaches in medical education. Within this scope, the first Virtual Reality (VR) lesson of the 2025–2026 Academic Year was successfully held for fourth-year students in the introductory period of clinical sciences.
The lesson was conducted under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Emrah İpek and Asst. Prof. Dr. Sercan Şeker. Students had the opportunity to combine their clinical skills with modern educational technologies by experiencing advanced medical practices in a three-dimensional VR environment. During this innovative lesson, students interactively experienced numerous modules ranging from the cardiovascular system and emergency intervention simulations to anatomy review and the step-by-step implementation of interventional procedures.
A New Era in Medical Education: Planning of the VR Medical Laboratory and VR Club
During the evaluation meeting held after the lesson, planning began for the establishment of a VR Medical Education Laboratory within the Faculty of Medicine and the creation of a student-centred VR Club. These two innovations aim to:
Provide students with regular access to VR-based clinical simulations,
Reinforce procedural skills in a safe environment,
Develop technology-based medical projects through academic–student collaboration,
Increase the national and international visibility of our Faculty through its innovative education model.
The VR laboratory is planned to be structured in integration with the advanced simulation infrastructure located at the Maslak 1453 Campus. The planned VR Club is also expected to organise workshops, demonstration days, simulation competitions and project development activities throughout the year.
Positive Feedback from Students
Fourth-year students who experienced the lesson stated that working with scenarios similar to real cases strengthened their clinical thinking processes and accelerated learning, particularly in fields such as cardiology, emergency medicine, surgery and anatomy.
