A panel event was organized at Istanbul Nişantaşı University as part of the July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day commemorations. The program began with an opening speech by our Rector, Prof. Dr. Ayşegül Komsuoğlu Çıtıpıtıoğlu, who emphasized that July 15 symbolizes the nation's will to uphold democracy and independence. The Rector highlighted that this resistance represents a strong collective memory that must be passed on to future generations.
The panel, moderated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tacettin Gökhan Özçelik, addressed the structural transformations in civil-military relations in recent years in Türkiye and the breaking of the coup culture. It was noted that July 15 marks a turning point whr the people directly opposed the coup attempt.
The historical development of military-political relations in Türkiye was also discussed, along with the effects of past military interventions on democracy. It was emphasized that reforms within the Turkish Armed Forces contributed to the institutionalization of democracy and that strengthening democratic awareness on a societal level is essential to overcoming the culture of coups.
The event concluded as a meaningful gathering whr the political, legal, and social dimensions of July 15 were evaluated with the participation of expert academics from various fields.
