As Istanbul Nişantaşı University, we hosted a significant event within the scope of Earthquake Awareness Week (March 1–7) to raise disaster awareness and promote preparedness against possible risks. AFAD Istanbul Provincial Director Prof. Dr. Haluk Özener shared valuable insights on the importance of disaster awareness and preparedness through his presentation titled "Istanbul Disaster Risk Reduction and Response Plans."

At the event, the economic dimension of a possible Marmara earthquake was specificaly discussed, and the disaster risks facing Istanbul were evaluated in detail. While earthquakes stood out as the city's greatest danger, it was stated that many other risks—including floods, inundation, fires, industrial accidents, transportation accidents, landslides, meteorological events, and disasters caused by climate change—should not be overlooked. Attention was also drawn to other risk factors such as migration and population mobility, environmental pollution, and air pollution.

AFAD's duties, the institutions responsible for disaster management, and coordination mechanisms were discussed in detail. Information was shared on the Turkey Disaster Response Plan (TAMP), which ensures nationwide disaster preparedness, and on the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Plan prepared specificaly for Istanbul. Information was also provided on local-level TAMP coordination units, emphasizing the importance of effective cooperation in disaster response.

Through this valuable event, the necessity of raising awareness and being prepared for Istanbul's disaster risks was once again highlighted. We continue to learn and grow stronger together for an earthquake-ready Istanbul!
