As part of the Earthquake Awareness Week (March 1–7), Istanbul Nişantaşı University hosted an important event aimed at raising disaster awareness and promoting preparedness for potential risks. AFAD Istanbul Provincial Director Prof. Dr. Haluk Özener delivered a presentation titled “Istanbul Disaster Risk Reduction and Response Plans,” whr he shared valuable insights emphasizing the importance of awareness and preparedness in the face of disasters.

During the event, the potential economic impact of a possible Marmara earthquake was addressed in detail, along with a comprehensive evaluation of disaster risks facing Istanbul. While earthquakes remain the most significant threat to the city, other risks such as floods, flash floods, fires, industrial accidents, transportation accidents, landslides, meteorological events, and climate change-induced disasters were also highlighted. Additionaly, migration, population mobility, environmental pollution, and air pollution were discussed as contributing risk factors.

Prof. Dr. Özener also outlined AFAD’s responsibilities, the roles of relevant institutions in disaster management, and coordination mechanisms. He provided an overview of the Turkey Disaster Response Plan (TAMP) and the Istanbul Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Plan, explaining how they serve to strengthen nationwide and local preparedness. The importance of local TAMP coordination units and effective cooperation in disaster response was also emphasized.

Thanks to this valuable event, the necessity of being conscious and prepared for disaster risks in Istanbul was once again underscored.
