Sönmez Güler, an instructor in the Foreign Languages Department at Istanbul Nişantaşı University, has successfully completed the internationaly recognized Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) at Teaching House in Boston, USA.
The intensive four-week programme, held between 15 June and 15 July, provided participants with comprehensive training in contemporary English language teaching methodology. Throughout the course, trainees completed eight assessed teaching practice (TP) sessions, receiving detailed feedback from experienced CELTA tutors, as well as four written assignments focusing on language awareness, teaching methodology, learner needs, and reflective professional practice.
Sharing his reflections on the programme, Sönmez Güler stated: “Before travelling to Boston, I was somewhat hesitant about taking the course because of my extensive teaching experience. However, after the first week, I realized that I had been teaching on autopilot. The course encouraged me to re-evaluate my teaching practices and adapt my methods to meet the evolving learning needs of today’s students. CELTA has significantly increased my awareness of effective language teaching, lesson planning, classroom interaction, and reflective practice. I now feel as though I have begun teaching again with a fresh perspective, renewed enthusiasm, and a stronger commitment to continuous professional development.”
The CELTA programme is recognized worldwide as one of the most prestigious qualifications in English language teaching. By successfully completing the programme, Sönmez Güler has further strengthened his expertise in learner-cantered teaching, communicative language teaching, and evidence-based classroom practices.
As the Foreign Languages Department at Istanbul Nişantaşı University, we will continue to support our instructors' professional development.
