The "Sustainability Meetings" event, hosted by Istanbul Nişantaşı University's Faculty of Art and Design, brought together leading figures in the industry.

The event began with an opening speech by Dr. Bahar Yıldız, who emphasized that sustainability is not just a necessity for the future but also an opportunity to reshape industries and lifestyles. Highlighting the central role of the textile sector due to its environmental and social impacts, Yıldız stressed the importance of sharing innovations and taking collective steps toward a sustainable future.

Global Environmental Insights from the Faculty of Art and Design
Prof. Dr. Berrin Şahin Kalsın, Dean of the Faculty of Art and Design, shared critical global data on the environmental impact of the textile sector. She noted that the sector accounts for 10% of global carbon emissions, consumes 93 billion cubic meters of water annualy, and generates millions of tons of waste. Kalsın emphasized the importance of eco-friendly design and sustainable production practices, caling for collective efforts to create a more sustainable textile industry.

The Role of Ethical Design in Sustainability
Gonca Yıldız Pabuşçu, Director of Gülle Entegre Textile Design Center, highlighted the key role of ethical design and environmental responsibility in building a sustainable future. She pointed out the industry’s focus on developing eco-friendly atrnatives to traditional materials like cotton and polyester, describing these efforts as vital for a future aligned with environmental and ethical values.

Sustainability in Governance and Supply Chains
Gülşah Belirgen, Director of Supply Planning and Quality Assurance at Koton Textiles, spoke about the importance of governance in contributing to sustainability through supply chains. She underscored the significance of working conditions and fair practices in the social dimension of sustainability. Belirgen also noted that while population growth demands efficient use of natural resources, it simultaneously creates new business opportunities and competitive advantages. She highlighted risk management, economic equality, and global solidarity as the cornerstones of a sustainable future.

Sustainability in Children's Wear
Aylin Ayakdaş, Designer for the LC Waikiki Girls' Baby Department, focused on sustainability in designing clothing for children aged 2-5. She explained that unisex designs extend the lifespan of garments by making them suitable for both boys and girls. Ayakdaş also emphasized the importance of functional designs, including adjustable and durable garments, to enhance usability. She noted that their production processes prioritize eco-friendly materials and energy-saving practices, resulting in environmentaly conscious, long-lasting products, and stressed the value of a sustainable approach to children's clothing.

The event provided a valuable platform for industry leaders and academics to explore innovative solutions and foster collaboration in sustainability.
