'Unimpeded' universities provide equal opportunities in education
The challenges that people with disabilities face in their daily lives are not only their problems, but all of us. So, we've built an unobstructed campus to remove the barriers.
According to World Health Organization (WHO), at least 10% of the world's population, or 650 million people, live with a disability. According to the resolution of the United Nations General Assembly in 1992, December 3 of each year is called International Day of Persons with Disabilities. On the day that the theme of this year is ‘ensuring the participation of individuals with disabilities and their participation in the 2030 development agenda’, the focus is on empowerment of individuals with disabilities in line with the 2030 plan and ensuring equal conditions for all individuals.
At this point, Nişantaşı University continues to organize various activities aimed at eliminating the obstacles to disabled people in social life at any time and reinforcing the meaning of this special day. Levent Uysal, founder of the University, who emphasized the importance of building an unimpeded life with love and empathy, said: “We are doing our best to ensure that they take a more active role in social life by removing obstacles in their lives. The challenges they face in their everyday lives are not just their problems, but all of us. We have built an unobstructed campus to remove the barriers to them in every sense of the matter, " he said.
EVERY CHALLENGE IS TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION
Levent Uysal, who noted that they provide many facilities for students with hearing, vision and physical disabilities on their campuses, said: “with Beacon devices built into the campus, the frequencies of ear devices can be adjusted according to the hearing thresholds of hearing impaired students. This allows the student to hear the sound clear from ambient noise and the perception of the teacher's voice is increased in the classroom. For visually impaired students, the classroom directions and all other directions on campus are written in the Braille alphabet. Also all the stair sills and walkways are built with precise flooring. Besides, our students can download the application of our university to their smartphones and access the point they want to go with the voice navigation system,” he said.
EQUALITY IN EDUCATION
“We aim to minimize the challenges our students will face, " said Levent Uysal, who stressed that the entire building was built as a zero height entrance for students using wheelchairs and walkers.“We aim to minimize the challenges our students will face, " said Levent Uysal, who stressed that the entire building was built as a zero height entrance for students using wheelchairs and walkers. In the exams, we provide many facilities according to the disability of our students. We are preparing special exam papers written in enlarged letters to help visually impaired students and we provide a research asistant to fill out their exam papers during the exam period to students who have lost their eyesight.
